The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost a hard-fought 36-30 game in overtime to the Atlanta Falcons, with too many missed tackles a critical factor in the loss. Throughout the game, Tampa Bay's defense struggled, allowing Atlanta quarterback Kirk Cousins to rack up 509 air yards and four touchdowns.
Tampa Bay Defense Suffers
The Buccaneers' inability to secure key tackles allowed the Falcons to extend plays, turning manageable short gains into meaningful yards.
The game culminated in dramatic fashion in overtime when Cousins connected on a pass to KhaDarel Hodge for a 45-yard touchdown. The play was primarily due to a missed tackle by Buccaneers cornerback Zyon McCollum.
McCollum had positioned himself well to deflect the pass just five yards out, but was unable to contact the ball or bring down Hodge, who was left with the open field to seal the victory.
Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles acknowledged McCollum's effort, but underscored the missed opportunity, stating, "The kid went out there to make the play...he just missed the ball and missed the tackle."
Bowles emphasized that the team had positioned itself correctly in several situations during the game, but that poor tackling undermined its ability to finish those plays.
Tampa Bay's defensive problems were not limited to one play. According to Bowles, missed tackles were a recurring theme, as several short-range receptions turned into longer gains due to the defense's inability to quickly bring down Atlanta receivers.
He pointed to numerous "catch and run" plays where the Falcons capitalized on 5-yard receptions and extended them into big gains. The Buccaneers' defense, which had been a strength in previous games, was exposed, and this loss puts both teams-Tampa Bay and Atlanta-with a 3-2 record, tied for first place in the NFC South.
Areas for Improvement
This setback is a blow to Tampa Bay's aspirations of winning their fourth consecutive NFC South title, and the team is well aware of the challenges ahead. In their next game, they will face another divisional rival, the New Orleans Saints, who will also be visiting on October 13.
Improving their defensive execution, particularly on tackles, will be a key priority as they prepare for that game. In addition to tactical improvements, the Buccaneers also hope to get all of their injured players back, as they had 14 players on the injury report prior to the Atlanta game.
On offense, quarterback Baker Mayfield had a solid performance, completing 19 of 24 passes for 180 yards and three touchdowns, throwing no interceptions. Mayfield's efficient play helped the Buccaneers build a 30-27 lead late in the fourth quarter.
However, the defense was unable to contain Cousins and the Falcons, allowing them to advance down the field to tie the game. Younghoe Koo kicked a 52-yard field goal as regulation time expired, sending the game into overtime.

Reflections After the Meeting
Reflecting on the game, Mayfield commented that on several occasions he felt the Buccaneers had a chance to close out the game. He expressed frustration that it went to overtime, saying that if he had taken full advantage of his opportunities, "maybe it shouldn't have even been an overtime situation."
Despite the missed opportunities, Mayfield kept his composure, having played a clean and efficient game.
On the defensive side, deep Christian Izen echoed Coach Bowles' comments about the team's correct positioning, but lapses in executing key plays. Izen emphasized the importance of taking that extra step to make tackles or improve ball awareness, especially at critical times.
Although disappointed by the result, Izen expressed confidence that the team can recover from this defeat.
He highlighted the maturity and leadership in the Buccaneers' locker room, stressing that a loss should not derail their season. "We just have to get better. We can't let one loss ruin the season," Izen commented, reinforcing the belief that there is still plenty of time for the team to correct course.
As the Buccaneers move forward, addressing their defensive lapses and working to get all of their players back will be a top priority. With the race for the NFC South tightening, their next game against the New Orleans Saints will be a crucial test to maintain their playoff aspirations.
