The Detroit Lions finally snapped their Thanksgiving Day losing streak with a dramatic 23-20 victory over the Chicago Bears, their first holiday win since 2016. Despite dominating the first half, the Lions endured a tense finish, largely due to a series of Bears mistakes that ended up costing them the game.
A Dominant First Half for the Lions
The Bears, trailing by three points late, spectacularly mismanaged the clock. With one timeout remaining, they let valuable seconds run out after a catch, trailing by just one play. Rookie Caleb Williams' final pass fell incomplete as time expired, securing the hard-fought victory for the Lions.
The Lions started the game in dominant fashion, showing why they are considered one of the best teams in the NFC this season. Their offense, led by quarterback Jared Goff, overwhelmed the Bears defense, while Detroit's defense stifled Chicago's initial attempts to build momentum.
Detroit completely controlled the first quarter, outgaining Chicago in total yards by a staggering 214-11 and racking up 15 first downs compared to none for the Bears. The Lions closed out the first series of the second quarter with a touchdown pass from Goff to tight end Sam LaPorta, establishing a 10-0 lead.
By halftime, the Lions had amassed 279 yards of offense compared to 53 for the Bears. Detroit's defense forced three consecutive three-and-out series early in the game, and Chicago didn't get a first down until there was less than a minute left in the first half. Despite their dominance, the Lions squandered opportunities to extend their lead, leaving the score at a manageable 16-0 for the Bears at the break.
Bears Respond
The Bears showed resilience in the second half, making adjustments that kept them in the game. Early in the third quarter, Caleb Williams connected with Keenan Allen for a touchdown, cutting Detroit's lead to 16-7.
However, the Lions quickly responded. Taking advantage of a controversial horse-collar penalty on a third-down stop, Detroit advanced until LaPorta caught his second touchdown of the game, extending the lead to 23-7.
Despite the setback, the Bears refused to give up. Williams found his rhythm, leading Chicago's offense down the field. Meanwhile, the Lions began to falter. A missed field goal in the fourth quarter kept the Bears within reach, and Williams capitalized with a 31-yard touchdown pass to DJ Moore, bringing the score to 23-20 with just over five minutes remaining.
A Chaotic Ending
The final minutes were filled with drama. After forcing a Detroit punt, the Bears found themselves cornered at their own 1-yard line. Williams led a series that included a crucial 25-yard reception by Moore, taking the Bears all the way to midfield as the two-minute warning approached.
However, the series fell apart after a catch pushed Chicago back and an offensive pass interference penalty nullified a first down reception by Moore. On fourth-and-14, Williams threw a deep pass to Moore, and Lions corner Kindle Vildor was flagged for defensive pass interference, giving the Bears new life.
The respite didn't last long. Another catch and a penalty pushed the Bears out of field goal range, leaving them scrambling to save the game. With 30 seconds remaining, Williams looked unsure how to manage the clock. Chicago failed to execute efficiently, running its final play with just six seconds remaining. Williams held the ball too long and eventually threw an incomplete pass, ending the Bears' hopes.

Although the Lions' second half performance was less convincing, the win raised their record to an impressive 11-1, keeping them in contention for the top playoff spot in the NFC. Their first-half dominance underscored their potential, although the narrow victory highlighted areas for improvement.
For the Bears, the loss was emblematic of a frustrating season. Despite flashes of promise from Williams and a valiant second-half comeback, poor clock management and critical mistakes proved costly. The result not only ruined their Thanksgiving hopes, but also increased the pressure on head coach Matt Eberflus, whose future with the team is increasingly uncertain.
Buoyed by this win, the Lions now focus on keeping the momentum going as they prepare for the playoffs. On the other hand, the Bears face a challenging week of reflection, knowing that their mistakes gave Detroit a chance to end their Thanksgiving drought.
