The Washington Commanders have made a significant addition to their defense by acquiring cornerback Marshon Lattimore, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, from the New Orleans Saints.
Washington and Detroit Strengthen Their Teams
Currently leading the NFC East, Washington has bolstered an already solid defense that ranks fifth against the pass this season. In exchange for Lattimore, the Saints received a third-round pick, a fourth-round pick and their previously traded sixth-round pick.
Washington also obtained a fifth-round pick from New Orleans as part of the deal. This move positions the Commanders as serious contenders, with a strengthened secondary that complements their solid defensive team.
In the NFC North, the Detroit Lions, who lead the division with a 7-1 record, acquired defensive end Za'Darius Smith from the Cleveland Browns. This addition comes at a critical time for Detroit, as their star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson is sidelined with a leg injury.
Hutchinson's absence leaves a void on the Lions' defensive line, which Smith, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, is expected to fill. Cleveland, facing a difficult season with a 2-7 record, appears focused on long-term restructuring.
As part of the trade, Detroit also received a 2026 seventh-round pick, while the Browns secured a fifth-round pick in 2025 and a sixth-round pick in 2026.
Pittsburgh Improves Its Offense And Baltimore Its Secondary
The Pittsburgh Steelers, with a 6-2 record, made moves to strengthen their roster, focusing on offense and defense. To support quarterback Russell Wilson, they traded with the New York Jets for wide receiver Mike Williams, who has accumulated 12 receptions for 166 yards this season.
Pittsburgh sent a fifth-round pick to the Jets in exchange for Williams. In addition, the Steelers acquired defensive linebacker Preston Smith from the Green Bay Packers in exchange for a 2025 seventh-round pick.
Smith has recorded 2.5 catches this season and brings experience averaging 8.5 catches per season over the past three years.
Strengthening their secondary, the Baltimore Ravens, now with a 6-3 record, traded corner Tre'Davious White to the Los Angeles Rams. A two-time Pro Bowl selection, White has missed the last four games, but is expected to add depth to Baltimore's defense as they look for a playoff berth.
In exchange, the Ravens traded a 2026 seventh-round pick, also receiving a 2027 seventh-round pick from the Rams as part of the transaction.
Movements in Dallas and Cincinnati
Dealing with injuries and a struggling 3-5 record, the Dallas Cowboys closed a deal with the Carolina Panthers to acquire wide receiver Jonathan Mingo, a second-round pick in 2023.
Mingo had a limited impact with the Panthers, hauling in just 12 receptions for 121 yards in nine games, but could provide a needed boost to the Dallas offense, which is without starting quarterback Dak Prescott due to a hamstring injury.
The Cowboys traded a 2024 fourth-round pick to acquire Mingo and received a 2025 seventh-round pick from Carolina in the exchange.
The Cincinnati Bengals, currently with a 4-5 record, added depth to their running back rotation by trading with the Chicago Bears to acquire Khalil Herbert. With limited use in Chicago, Herbert managed just eight carries for 16 yards and one touchdown this season.
Cincinnati traded a 2025 seventh-round pick in exchange for Herbert, who joins Chase Brown in the backfield as the Bengals address depth concerns following an injury to Zack Moss.
To strengthen their defensive line, the San Francisco 49ers (4-4) acquired defensive tackle Khalil Davis from the Houston Texans. Davis has played in nine games this season, recording one catch and nine tackles, and is expected to improve San Francisco's defensive rotation.
In exchange for Davis, the 49ers traded a 2026 seventh-round pick to Houston.

Other Important Changes
Prior to the deadline, several teams made notable trades. The Kansas City Chiefs, with an 8-0 record, strengthened both their offense and defense by acquiring wide receiver D'Andre Hopkins and defensive end Josh Esche.
Hopkins quickly made an impact with two touchdowns in his second game, helping secure an overtime victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The New York Jets, despite a struggling 3-6 record, added star receiver Davante Adams three weeks ago, and Adams has already contributed significantly in a recent win over the Houston Texans.
The Buffalo Bills, currently with a 7-2 record, added Amari Cooper, who scored a touchdown in his first game with the team. The Baltimore Ravens also bolstered their receiving corps by signing Diontae Johnson, who contributed in their dominant win over the Denver Broncos.
Additionally, the Minnesota Vikings (6-2) addressed their offensive line by acquiring left tackle Cam Robinson, a crucial move in their recent win over the Indianapolis Colts. The Arizona Cardinals (5-4) strengthened their defense by acquiring linebacker Baron Browning from the Denver Broncos, securing their position in first place in the NFC West.
This season also saw the NFL extended its trade deadline by an additional week, allowing teams to reevaluate and make last-minute moves that could shape their path in the latter part of the season.
