Giants' Preseason Victory Highlights Emerging Talent of Devito and Gray

|

The New York Giants earned a 14-3 victory over the Detroit Lions in a preseason game at MetLife Stadium, where both teams opted to rest their starters amid light rain.

This game served as an important platform for younger and less experienced players to showcase their skills, especially for Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito and running back Eric Gray, both of whom made significant contributions.

Devito Leads Offensive With Confidence

Tommy DeVito, filling in for the injured Drew Lock late in the first quarter, led the Giants on two successful offensive series during the first half. DeVito completed 8 of his 15 pass attempts, racking up 92 yards. His performance was a testament to his growth since joining the Giants as an undrafted free agent last year.

In his rookie season, DeVito was thrust into the starting role in six games due to injuries to Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor. Entering this year's camp as the third quarterback, DeVito has continued to show his development, displaying a deeper understanding of the game and a noticeable reduction in anxiety compared to his freshman season.

Eric Gray, a fifth-round pick in the 2023 draft, also shined brightly in this preseason game. Gray rushed for 52 yards on just four carries and added another 46 yards through the air on four receptions.

He scored both of the Giants' touchdowns, one on an impressive 48-yard run and another from just one yard out, showing his potential to be a key player for the Giants in the future. Gray's performance marked a significant improvement over his rookie season, where he had limited involvement behind star running back Saquon Barkley and Matt Breida.

During the early stages of this year's camp, Gray was still positioned behind Devin Singletary and Tyrone Tracy, but this game highlighted his readiness to take on a larger role. Gray attributed his success to a more relaxed approach, avoiding the excessive complications that hindered him during his rookie year.

Lions With Mixed Moments

On the other hand, the Lions struggled to find their rhythm, especially on offense. Head Coach Dan Campbell admitted that the team's overall performance was subpar, although he acknowledged the value of game tape in evaluating players.

The Lions' offensive struggles were evident as they converted only 5 of their 17 third-down attempts and missed on all four fourth-down attempts, finishing 0-for-3 in the red zone.

The Lions quarterback situation was less than ideal, with Nate Sudfeld starting the game and completing 13 of 24 passes for 96 yards, but he also threw an interception.

Backup Drew Lock, who managed just 17 yards on 4-of-10 passing before injuring his hip, was able to continue if needed, but was replaced by Hendon Hooker in the second half. Hooker completed 5 of 9 passes for 36 yards and added 34 yards on the ground on four carries before leaving the game with a concussion.

Defensively, the Lions had a notable moment when Brandon Joseph intercepted a Drew Lock pass, returning it 20 yards to set up a 53-yard field goal by Jake Bates. This would be the only point the Lions scored in the game.

However, the Giants defense also had standout performances, particularly from rookie linebacker Dru Phillips, who made a crucial stop on a 4th-and-1 play that led to a Giants touchdown.

Sophomore linebacker Derrian Beavers led the Giants with five tackles, including two key stops during a series led by Hendon Hooker.

Lions Special Teams

Special teams play was a mix of hits and misses for the Lions.

Jake Bates, who is competing for the team's kicking position after playing in the United Football League with the Michigan Panthers, successfully converted the 53-yard field goal, but miscalculated the ensuing kickoff, giving the Giants advantageous field position.

Overall, the preseason game between the Giants and Lions provided crucial opportunities for player evaluation, especially for those on the verge of securing a roster spot.

Despite the absence of headliners, the game offered valuable insights into the depth and potential of both teams, setting the stage for future developments.
