Lions Advance Against Tampa Bay

|

The Detroit Lions held off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers long enough to pull out a 31-23 victory in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Divisional Round of the playoffs.

Detroit's offense came alive in the second half, thanks to a big play by Jahmyr Gibbs, and the Lions defense came up with two key turnovers, including the game-sealer by linebacker Derrick Barnes.

Lions Off to a Solid Start

In the first quarter, the Detroit Lions won the turnover and got the ball first, but their drive stalled, leading them to opt for a field goal to take a 3-0 lead. Tampa Bay responded with a field goal to tie the game 3-3. Both teams advanced to midfield, but faced challenges on third down.

In the second quarter, Jared Goff led the Lions with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Josh Reynolds, leading them to a 10-3 lead over the Buccaneers.

Although the Lions had a chance to extend their lead to two touchdowns, they were only able to advance to midfield before running into trouble. During this drive, left guard Jonah Jackson suffered an injury and would not return to the game.

Tampa Bay responded with a standout drive that took them into field goal position, but a 50-yard attempt hit the left post.

The Lions got the ball back with 2:24 remaining, but were unable to capitalize, and on a third down and short, Goff was caught.

Tampa had another chance before halftime, driving quickly to the 2-yard line with outstanding plays by Baker Mayfield and Mike Evans.

Buccaneers Never Back in the Game

Tampa started the second half, but could not take the lead. The Buccaneers surprisingly continued to be effective in the ground game with White, who started the series with runs of 5 and 14 yards.

However, on third down and 4 from the Lions' 39-yard line, Aidan Hutchinson caught Mayfield.

The Lions had a quick sack after an illegal blocking penalty wiped out a big play and a third-down conversion.

Despite having good field position, Tampa also went three-and-out against Detroit. Brian Branch had a nice tackle for loss on first down, and Kerby Joseph had a well-timed pass breakup.

With 8:11 remaining in the third quarter, the Lions offense started again at their own 36-yard line.

A few plays later, they faced a fourth down and goal from the 1-yard line. Of course, Dan Campbell opted to go for it, and Craig Reynolds ran it in.

With the Lions up 17-10, Mayfield drove the Bucs straight down the field on the next drive, targeting Otton on three consecutive plays for gains of 9, 13 and 27 yards, reaching the red zone.

On the ensuing third down and 10, the Bucs ran a perfectly timed screen that caught the Lions by surprise and White ran for a 12-yard touchdown. The game was tied 17-17.

The final quarter began with Goff connecting with Gibbs for a 12-yard gain. Another 18 from Josh Reynolds quickly got Detroit into Bucs territory.

Gibbs then broke through the middle of the line and ran for a 31-yard touchdown to give the Lions the lead back, 24-17.

Goff then returned to Gibbs, whose 20-yard reception and run put Detroit in field goal position. A few plays later, Goff threw a perfect pass to St. Brown for a 9-yard touchdown and a 31-17 Lions lead.

Mayfield finally found Evans for a 16-yard touchdown with 4:37 remaining. Detroit got a crucial two-point conversion stop to leave the score at 31-23, still in favor of the Lions.

The Bucs would get the ball with 1:59 left and a timeout at their own 10-yard line. Down by 8, they needed 90 yards and a two-point conversion to force overtime.

Mayfield's series didn't last long, however, as linebacker Derrick Barnes stepped in on a pass for an interception that sealed the game.
