Bengals Beat Bills

|

When the Cincinnati Bengals started the season with a 1-3 record, including two crushing losses in which they scored just three points in each game against the Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans, it seemed certain that Joe Burrow's calf injury would eventually slow the team down.

Since that loss to Tennessee, the Bengals have returned to their previous form. And that team made another appearance on "Sunday Night Football"against the Buffalo Bills.

Cincinnati took a 21-7 lead in the first half against Buffalo, and the defense did the rest, limiting the Bills to just 11 points the rest of the game as the Bengals earned their fourth straight win, beating the Bills 24-18

The Bengals Achieve Their Fourth Consecutive Victory

Fans expected this to be an offensive showdown between two elite quarterbacks. And after the first three series of the game, it looked like it would be. The Bengals scored a touchdown on the first opening series in just nine plays, matched quickly by a Bills touchdown series in seven plays and 3:15 of time.

The Bengals regained the lead on a 5:28 touchdown run to close out the first half. From there, however, defensive back Lou Anarumo kept Josh Allen and the Bills off balance offensively for most of the remainder of the game. The next four series of the first half were clearance, interception, clearance and end of the half.

Burrow and the Bengals, meanwhile, had a few hiccups in Buffalo territory, but scored a touchdown on their final series of the first half to take a two-possession lead into the locker room.

Buffalo added a field goal on the first series of the second half and held the Bengals to just three points, but it wasn't until 3:32 remained that Allen finally got the Bills back into the end zone.

With a 17-yard pass to Diggs and a subsequent two-point conversion attempt to bring the score within six points, Allen got Buffalo back in the game.

The Bengals got the ball back with 3:32 remaining, but relied on player number nine, having him to start the series that would seal the game with a long 32-yard pass to Tyler Boyd to quickly put the Bengals in Buffalo territory.

Joe Mixon ran three times for the final first down needed to allow Burrow to take a knee and end the game.

Burrows and the Bengals' Numbers

In an expected rematch between Allen and Burrow, it was the Bengals quarterback who once again came out on top both on the scoreboard and on the stat sheet.

Burrow, who lost his right index fingernail early in the game, completed 31 of 44 passes for 348 yards and two touchdowns.

Tee Higgins caught eight passes for 110 yards. Ja'Marr Chase caught four passes for 41 yards and hurt his back when he landed hard on the turf, but remained in the game. Joe Mixon rushed for 37 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries and caught five passes for 31 yards.

The Bengals, who eliminated the Bills from the postseason in 2022, outgained Buffalo in yards gained, 397 to 317, and had a plus-2 edge in turnover ratio.

With the win, the Bengals move into the final wild card spot behind the Steelers and Browns, while the Bills fall out of the AFC playoff race.
