Bengals Defeat 49ers

|

At Levi's Stadium, two franchises that met in two Super Bowl classics delivered a midseason dream as the Cincinnati Bengals mounted a 31-17 victory over the powerhouse team of the NFCthe San Francisco 49ers.

This was all thanks to the performance of Pro Bowl quarterback Joe Burrow, who performed impressively, leading them to their third straight win.

Burrows Led the Way to Victory

Burrow dismantled the 49ers defense, which ranked first in several categories, and set a personal record in pass completion percentage at 87.5% on 28-of-32 for 283 yards and touchdown passes to three different receivers.

Running back Joe Mixon closed the game in fitting fashion when he scored a five-yard touchdown with 2:54 minutes remaining. He totaled 87 yards on 16 carries, being a product of nearby Oakley, California.

Wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase posted his third 100-plus yard game this season with 100 yards on 10 catches, while Burrow ran for 43 yards.

The Bengals linebackers, in a stadium that is home to Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw, had a standout performance in intercepting 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy on two consecutive plays in the second half.

The second interception occurred with the Bengals leading 17-10 early in the fourth quarter when Purdy attempted a pass to wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk downfield.

However, Logan Wilson was waiting with his 10th career interception, the most for any NFL linebacker in the 2020s.

On the next play, Burrow compounded the damage by throwing a 17-yard pass to Chase to extend the lead to 24-10. Chase sealed the drive with a fancy backward leaping catch as the clock hit 13 minutes remaining.

Burrow's longest carry of the season, a 20-yard run, opened the second half and set the stage for Evan McPherson's 56-yard field goal attempt, which gave the Bengals a 17-10 lead.

The Bengals' red zone defense again came to the forefront on one of the final plays of the third quarter, with the 49ers on a first down from the Bengals' eight-yard line.

When Purdy attempted a pass to Elijah Mitchell as he escaped to his right sideline, Bengals linebacker Germaine Pratt made a one-handed interception before going out of bounds.

After saluting 49ers Hall of Famer Joe Montana before the game, Burrow performed exceptionally well, leading the Bengals to a 14-10 halftime lead.

The 49ers Never Came Back

Burrows completed 21 of 23 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns, including his final 19 attempts for the longest streak of his career.

When he got the ball again with 2:54 minutes remaining in the first half and after completing a pass to Mixon, the Bengals advanced to the 49ers' 5-yard line.

However, at that point, tight end Irv Smith fumbled the ball away, wasting a half in which the Bengals had dominated with 236 total yards.

The Bengals started the game with a series that included four plays from midfield out of ten opportunities.

One of those snaps turned into a 15-yard catch by Chase over the middle of the field and they scored a touchdown when Burrow threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Boyd on a pass to the corner against corner Isaiah Oliver.

However, the key play of the series found Burrow escaping three third-down sack attempts and ten yards to go.

In the last sack attempt, Burrow confused everyone into thinking that Arik Armstead had captured him.

Instead, Burrow appeared just in time to find wide receiver Tee Higgins with a pass down the sideline and complete a first-chance pass.

The second series had a similar dynamic. After Trayveon Williams returned the kickoff 41 yards, the Bengals advanced more than 50 yards on the opening drive.

They got two first downs on the first three plays, all under center field. When Burrow threw a 22-yard pass to Boyd in the middle of the field, they got the touchdown.

The second series ended with a touchdown pass from Burrow to wide receiver Andrei Iosivas that resembled Iosivas' first career touchdown two weeks ago.

Burrow threw a two-yard touchdown pass just as it appeared Warner had avoided the reception. That sequence left Burrow 10-of-12 for 95 yards with a total of 106 yards on first down opportunities in the first two series.

On the next series, Burrow preserved the drive with his legs by running on a third-and-9 play, changing the play at the last moment.

Shortly thereafter, Arik Armstead finally made the catch for the 49ers' only sack of the first half. This play turned Evan McPherson's 43-yard field goal attempt into a 50-yard attempt due to the wind.

On third-and-long, Purdy failed to find a receiver and ran for 15 yards untouched. Then, while escaping pressure to his left, he found wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk open for 31 yards.
