This past weekend brought plenty of MLB action MLB that didn't go as some fans had hoped. However, there were also a number of hits that continue to highlight the accomplishments the league is experiencing this year.
Tigers defeat the Twins
On Sunday, the Detroit Tigers defeated the Minnesota Twins by a score of 6-4, thanks to back-to-back home runs by Spencer Torkelson and Kerry Carpenter that resulted in five runs each.
The Tigers, third in the American League Central to the Twins, saw big performances from Carpenter and Andy Ibanez, both recording three hits apiece. After a rough start to June with 11 losses in 12 games, the Tigers have turned things around, winning three of their last four games. Brendan White, one of seven pitchers used by Detroit, secured his first win by pitching two scoreless innings.
Minnesota's Carlos Correa had two hits for the team. The Twins connected for a total of eight hits, led by Alex Lange. Lange managed to strike out two batters, but also struggled with two base on balls and a wild pitch that gave way to an RBI double. When the bases were loaded and none out, Jason Foley entered the game to replace Lange.
With the score at 6-4, Royce Lewis was able to get an RBI single against Foley. However, Foley didn't let it get out of hand and struck out Kyle Farmer with a fly out before striking out Joey Gallo and Byron Buxton. Since returning from the injured list Thursday, Buxton has gone 0-for-13 with eight strikeouts.
The Tigers received fantastic contributions from a handful of Latin American players. Javier Baez, a native of Puerto Rico, recorded four hits, including a run and an RBI. Andy Ibanez, originally from Cuba, also had an impressive four hits, as well as an RBI. Miguel Cabrera could have gotten only one hit, but it resulted in an RBI for the Tigers.
The Tigers have a three-game series starting today against the KC Royals.

Giants find success through Webb
Few things have been as reliable for the Giants this season as Logan Webb going deep into games. He did it again in the final game of the series Sunday at Dodger Stadium, pitching two-run ball in seven innings as San Francisco defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers, 7-3, for a sweep and San Francisco's seventh consecutive victory.
In helping the Giants to their first clean drive at Dodger Stadium Aug. 20-22, 2012, Webb had to navigate through traffic, as he allowed eight hits, two bases on balls and a hit batter, while striking out five. But even when the Dodgers managed to get to him, Webb did a good job of not letting things get out of hand, stifling the exchanges in the fourth and fifth innings after just one run. That was thanks to an arsenal that was effective virtually everywhere.
The Giants will face the San Diego Padres later today as part of a four-game series. They are well ahead of their next opponents and should be able to advance further.
Lynn makes White Sox history
In the final game of the series against the Seattle Mariners and in his 15th start of the 2023 season, Chicago White Sox pitcher Lance Lynn struck out 16 against the home team at T-Mobile Park to tie the franchise record. With Lance Lynn's 16 strikeouts for Chicago, the American tied the mark that belonged to Jack Harshman since 1954, who also did it as a visitor against the Boston Red Sox.
In his 114-pitch performance on the mound, the veteran threw seven complete innings and allowed three runs. Although he struck out 16 and tied the organization mark, Lynn had to settle for another loss in the game as the Mariners won 5-1. In his 12th major league season, Lance Lynn is posting negative numbers as he has a record of four wins and eight losses, an ERA of 6.51 and a WHIP of 1.51.
The White Sox begin a three-game series today against the American League West-leading Texas Rangers, which certainly won't help their record. The Mariners are off, but face the Yankees tomorrow.
