Bronny James Improves Performance in Lakers' Summer League Victory

|

Bronny James, son of the NBA's all-time scoring leader in the NBALeBron James, showed a remarkable performance in the Los Angeles Lakers' 87-86 Summer League victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Improved Performance

This game highlighted his best performance among his five appearances this summer, scoring 12 points and showing significant improvement in his shooting. James managed to convert 5-of-11 attempts from the field, including 2-of-5 from beyond the arc.

Remarkably, he converted four of his first five shots and scored his first triple of the summer on his 17th attempt, a milestone considering his previous struggles.

James entered Wednesday's game facing shooting challenges, having made just 7-of-31 attempts from the field and 4-of-19 shots in his two games in Las Vegas. Despite those struggles, his recent performance underscored his ability to bounce back.

Throughout the summer league, spanning three games in Las Vegas and two at the California Classic in San Francisco, James has averaged 5.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game with a 29% shooting percentage.

His one season at Southern California saw him average 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game, appearing in the team's final 25 games after addressing a congenital heart defect discovered after a cardiac arrest during a workout last summer.

Much of Bronny's resilience and success is attributed to the support of his parents, LeBron and his mother, who have guided him through the pressures of high-level play. Even though LeBron is overseas with Team USA, he has consistently offered advice, encouraging Bronny to stay aggressive and persistent.

Performance against Atlanta

The game against the Hawks started on a positive note with Bronny spinning off a screen and sinking a 17-foot jumper, eliciting cheers from the Laker-friendly crowd at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Scoring 9 of his 12 points in the first half, Bronny showed his ability to contribute early, including a crucial three-pointer late in the game that tied the score.

The Lakers secured their first summer league win in 2024 with a defensive stop in the final seconds, a significant milestone for the team with Bronny's contribution being pivotal.

Throughout the summer league, Bronny has been under intense scrutiny, with his every move closely watched by the crowd and the media. Despite this pressure, he delivered his best performance, showing commendable resilience and potential.

Lakers center Colin Castleton, who led the team with 17 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals, praised Bronny for his mentality and being a great teammate, noting that everyone in the organization enjoys being around him.

Lakers summer league coach Dane Johnson expressed confidence in Bronny's shooting abilities, encouraging him to continue taking open shots and reiterating the team's belief in his potential.

Capacity in Doubt

During a summer league loss to Boston, a viral social media post captured Celtics star Jaylen Brown appearing to question Bronny's potential as a professional player. This incident sparked significant online discussions.

In response, Rich Paul, CEO of Klutch Sports and agent for LeBron and Bronny, defended Bronny, emphasizing that all players are in a developmental phase and highlighting Bronny's passion for basketball and strong defensive skills.

Looking ahead, Bronny is excited about the potential opportunity to play alongside his father, LeBron, next season. He sees this as a significant step for both of them and believes that working together will strengthen their relationship and chemistry on the court. Bronny expressed enthusiasm for practicing against his father, viewing it as a valuable and enjoyable experience.

The Lakers have two remaining summer league games in Las Vegas against the Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls. These games present more opportunities for Bronny to showcase his skills and continue to improve.

Maintaining confidence and momentum from his recent performance, taking open shots and building great habits will be crucial to his professional career. The support of his teammates, coaches and family will play a vital role as he navigates these final summer league games and prepares for next season.
