Knicks Defeat the Cavs

|

The New York Knicks still dominate the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA. After a summer of planning revenge against their playoff tormentors, the Cavs brought out a decimated roster in a weak attempt at revenge.

However, the team was unable to prevent the result from being snatched away by the Knicks in a victorious Halloween night outing that ended with a 109-91 score in favor of New York at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

The Knicks' Three All-Stars

Jalen Brunson, RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley and Julius Randle combined to score 72 points in a game that the Knicks said changed with a third-quarter timeout and a Tom Thibodeau-style pep talk.

The third quarter started poorly, with a lack of energy, but then they improved our performance, Brunson explained. Under Thibodeau's direction, he urged them to improve and they were able to turn the game around.

The Knicks had five players score in double-digits and led for the final 39 minutes, with Randle grabbing 10 rebounds for his fourth consecutive double-double to start the season.

Donovan Mitchell returned to face his home team and tried to keep the Cavs afloat by scoring 26 points on 11-of-20 shooting.

However, as former Knicks general manager Scott Perry recently explained in justifying why the Knicks did not trade for the athletic point guard, Mitchell was not that "singular force."

The Knicks blew the game open in the third quarter and the Cavs went back to what they were, going six straight minutes without a shot from the field. Just before that game-changing run, Randle knew Thibodeau's spirited talk was coming.

The Knicks had let the lead dwindle to four and were playing defense. Randle shared his familiarity with the situation by mentioning that he's used to it by now.

In addition, Randle indicated that he has an idea of what the coach is thinking and what his expectations are. In this case, the wake-up call was effective in motivating us and we got a positive response.

The Cavs Were Held Back By New York

Mitchell's status was reportedly up in the air until shortly before the game, as the team listed him as questionable due to a sore hamstring.

But he looked perfectly healthy and athletic during his 26 minutes. He simply had no help. It's unclear if that will change for Wednesday's rematch at MSG, with Caris LeVert, Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen out of Tuesday's game due to nagging injuries.

Mitchell acknowledged that the situation is complicated due to the absence of several players. Despite the loss, he expressed his desire to win at the end of the day.

However, he emphasized the importance of not getting caught up in this defeat and looking ahead, as they have another game scheduled for Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the Knicks, who shot 44.2 percent overall and 38.2 percent from beyond the arc, dominated on the road.

The Cavs had talked the previous two days about returning the favor to the Knicks after getting pummeled by Thibodeau's team in last season's playoffs.

Isaac Okoro, the team's starting small forward said the loss affected him until the Knicks were eliminated by Miami. Max Strus, a newcomer, said he embraced Cleveland's rivalry with the Knicks. Strus showed a willingness to embrace any previous rivalry his team has had with the Knicks

However, in Tuesday's game, Strus was unable to make a significant contribution as he missed 7 of his 9 shot attempts. Meanwhile, Okoro recorded 11 points in 24 minutes of play. They didn't scare anyone.

The Knicks, on the other hand, were completely healthy and, like the Cavs, had been resting for two days. They took advantage of the situation and went about their task without responding to Cleveland's verbal boast.
